Starbucks takes over west coast coffee rival:

Coffee People has been swallowed up by Starbucks.

The java giant has bought 40 stores from the Coffee People chain’s current owner, Diedrich Coffee, in a $13.5 million deal.

Known for its quirky, hippie roots and “No back talk” policy, Coffee People started in Eugene’s Saturday market in the late 1970s.

Diedrich Coffee — a 200-store chain based in Irvine, California — bought Coffee People in 1999. Diedrich said the deal is subject to several conditions, including approval by its stockholders and deed transfers for its store locations.

Oh, man. I hope this isn’t the terrible, terrible news it appears to be. A stop through the Powell St. Coffee People is a big part of the “headed across town to zoo or farmer’s market” ritual for us.

Hopefully the Starbucks takeover will be to Coffee People as the Yahoo takeover was to del.icio.us and flickr. Super-hopefully, it won’t be a case of the Coffee Peoples becoming shambling zombie thralls who call themselves Coffee People even as they leak Starbucks from their ghastly head wounds. I’d rather just see the Starbucks flag hoisted over them and work K.C. into our Saturday cross-town ritual than get double-punches for answering the daily trivia question from a reanimated corpse.

I haven’t been to a Coffee People since moving down to So Cal years ago, but down here I much prefer Starbucks to Diedrich. The atmosphere, the staff, and particularly the coffee. Of course I’ve pretty much abandoned both for Peet’s and Coffee Bean.

The Coffee People we frequent the most is very, very friendly. I also just plain old prefer the mocha they serve … especially the black tiger kind. It’s got an underlying something … maybe it’s just sediment … I dig.

But, you know … either way we’ve got K.C. on the street corner, and she kicks the butt of the other two indies within a half mile of our house, so we’ll survive. Somehow. :-)

Which is the one that they had that was like a mocha except made with drip coffee instead of milk? I remember it was a squirt of chocolate, couple shots of espresso and then coffee all the way up. Awesome. =)

Jeepers, brian! That sounds … spectacular! I need to get down to the Coffee People asap and see if I can maybe subject my kidneys to that a few times before the deal’s final!
