Why I’ll Never Get Paid for Punditry

Brad DeLong quotes Victor Davis Hanson:

> Now the battlefield, Thucydides’s harsh schoolmaster, will adjudicate what talk cannot.

It’s funny, because that’s one sentence in a four graf quote meant to illustrate just what, exactly, a fire-breathing ninny looks like when it twists in the wind. But that one sentence seemed to me to be pretty much all you’d need to asphyxiate from laughter.

On the other hand, I’ve got something new to harass everyone I know with:

  • Now my dirty socks, Thucydides’s harsh schoolmaster, will be washed today.

  • Now Ben, Thucydides’s harsh schoolmaster, will need to have his diaper changed.

  • Now this meal, Thucydides’s harsh schoolmaster, will be eaten.

And on and on.

“Thucydides’s harsh schoolmaster” is the new “How can you say that after 9/11?”
