I probably buy too many books when there’s a library branch just several blocks away. The last time I ventured into the Multnomah Co. online catalog, though, it sucked. It has since been improved, and I also found the fairly cool LibraryLookup bookmarklet generator.
The bookmarklet works when you visit Amazon, Powells online, Borders online or Barnes & Noble online (that I’ve tested so far). Bring up the book you’re interested in, click the bookmarklet, get a popup window that takes you to that page in your library’s online catalog.
It works in Safari or Firefox (though with Firefox the popup behaves more like a popunder, so make sure to look for it behind your main browser window).
Even more enticing is a Greasemonkey user script called Amazon PDX Linky, which is supposed to add a catalog lookup + a link to Powells to every Amazon book page. It isn’t working for me, but I’ve seen updates posted to it on 11/29, 11/30 and 12/01, so maybe it’s in progress.
p>I’m not understanding something about linking to generated bookmarklets, but here’s the link to the one I generated. Pasting it into a new bookmark seems to work o.k.
