id est exempli gratia

Whenever I come across “i.e.” and “e.g.” I think back to First Sergeant Frank “Dirty Red” Rhodes, who loved to use both:

“Listen up, Delta Company … tonight’s the damn brigade formal. You go home and you tell your spouses and whatever little crumbsnatchers you’ll be bringing along that if they come dressed in a manner that’s inappropriate, i.e. lookin’ like goddamn hoochies, e.g. all hangin’ out or they asses showin’, I’m gonna send ’em home.”

Sort of a lone beacon of taste, Top was.
